Rockwell Hardness Testing Machine (dial)

RASN
Introduction

RASN

Dial-type Rockwell hardness tester with manual load selection and an automatic zero-setting dial gauge. The powder-coated body, hardened elevating-screw bush and precision-bearing plunger give consistent, reliable accuracy over a long machine life for regular Rockwell scales on steels and non-ferrous metals.

The RASN is the entry point to the Eklavya Techno Solutions Rockwell range: a dial-reading, hand-operated hardness tester built in Ichalkaranji, India for heat-treatment shops, forging units, machine shops and training laboratories that want dependable Rockwell readings without any electronics. The Rockwell principle is straightforward. A 10 kgf minor load seats the indenter, a major load of 60, 100 or 150 kgf is applied and released, and the additional depth of penetration is converted into a hardness number that is read straight off the auto-zeroing dial. All nine regular scales from HRA to HRK are covered by pairing the load selector with the diamond and 1/16 inch ball indenters.

Mechanically the RASN is designed for a long working life. The elevating screw runs in a hardened and ground bush that limits lateral play to under 0.05 mm at full height, the loading plunger rides on precision bearings, and a dash-pot controls load application so every cycle is smooth and repeatable. With 230 mm test height and 133 mm throat depth it accepts most bar stock, gears, dies and heat-treated components, and it ships with flat and V-groove tables, Rockwell C and B test blocks, a clamping device and a machine cover.

  • Modern machine body with a large front-mounted dial gauge; the whole body is powder-coated so the paint shade stays intact and the machine looks new for years
  • Automatic zero-setting readout dial for easy and precise operation
  • Elevating screw precisely guided in a hardened and ground bush, limiting lateral movement to less than 0.05 mm even at full height for long-term accuracy and stability
  • Loading mechanism with a hardened support interface, eliminating any variation in readings caused by table movement or repeated use
  • Perfect vertical movement of the loading plunger ensured by precision bearings
  • Dash-pot controlled load application for a smooth, repeatable test cycle
  • Long machine life with consistent and reliable accuracy
  • Supplied with flat and V-groove testing tables, indenters, certified test blocks, clamping device and machine cover

Operation

How the test runs

  1. Fit the indenter and table for the scale to be tested and select the major load with the load selector.
  2. Raise the specimen against the indenter with the handwheel until the minor load is applied and the dial auto-zeroes.
  3. Apply the major load with the loading lever, wait for the dwell and release the load.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about RASN

Which Rockwell scales can the RASN test?

The RASN covers the nine regular Rockwell scales HRA, HRB, HRC, HRD, HRE, HRF, HRG, HRH and HRK using major loads of 60, 100 and 150 kgf with a 10 kgf minor load. A diamond indenter (Rockwell RA) and a 1/16 inch ball indenter are supplied, which gives you the common HRC and HRB scales straight out of the box; ask ETS for the matching ball indenter if you need the scales that use a larger ball.

What kinds of parts and materials is it suitable for?

HRC on the diamond indenter is the standard scale for hardened and tempered steels, dies, gears and tool steel; HRB with the 1/16 inch ball suits annealed steels, brass, bronze and aluminium alloys. The 230 mm test height, 133 mm throat and V-groove table for 6 to 45 mm rounds take most shafts, rings, castings and cut samples used in Indian heat-treatment and machine shops.

What is the difference between the RASN, RASNB and RASN-Twin?

All three share the same dial-reading frame and manual load cycle. The RASN tests regular Rockwell scales only. The RASNB adds 187.5 and 250 kgf loads and a 2.5 mm ball for Brinell testing, with the impression read on a supplied microscope. The RASN-Twin adds the 15, 30 and 45 kgf superficial loads and a 3 kgf minor load for case-hardened and thin parts. Choose by the scales you actually need.

Which standards does the RASN comply with?

The machine is built and verified to IS 1586 (Part 2), ASTM E18 and ISO 6508-2, the Indian, American and international standards for Rockwell hardness testing machines. Test reports produced on it are therefore acceptable to customers and auditors who specify any of these standards for incoming or in-process hardness inspection.

Does the RASN print results or connect to a computer?

No. The RASN is a purely mechanical dial tester with a 1 Rockwell resolution readout, which is exactly why it is so robust and inexpensive to maintain. If you need 0.1 Rockwell resolution, dwell timing, USB export of results as CSV, PC software or a built-in thermal printer, look at the RASN-D digital version of the same machine.

What comes with the machine and how is it calibrated?

The RASN is supplied with a 50 mm flat table, a 38 mm V-groove table, the diamond and 1/16 inch ball indenters, certified Rockwell C and Rockwell B test blocks, a clamping device and a cover. Calibration is done with the certified test blocks at installation, and the same blocks let you check the tester each day. ETS offers calibration with traceable certificates and AMC support across India.
