Rockwell cum Brinell Hardness Testing Machine (dial)

RASNB

RASNB
Introduction

RASNB

Dial-type Rockwell tester extended with 187.5 and 250 kgf loads for Brinell testing with 2.5 mm ball; the Brinell impression is measured with the supplied microscope. Same robust powder-coated frame, auto-zero dial and hardened-bush elevating screw as the RASN.

The RASNB is a Rockwell cum Brinell dial hardness tester manufactured by Eklavya Techno Solutions in Ichalkaranji, India for shops that test both hardened parts and softer castings or forgings on one bench. It keeps everything that makes the RASN dependable, including the powder-coated body, the automatic zero-setting dial, the hardened and ground elevating-screw bush and the dash-pot controlled load cycle, and extends the load range to 60, 100, 150, 187.5 and 250 kgf. The three lower loads serve the regular Rockwell scales A to K; the two higher loads are used with the supplied 2.5 mm ball for Brinell scales HBW 2.5/187.5 and HBW 2.5/250.

Brinell testing on this machine works differently from Rockwell. Instead of reading depth on the dial, the operator selects the Brinell load by hand, makes the indentation, and measures the diameter of the impression with the supplied Brinell microscope before reading the hardness value from the standard tables. The machine offers 230 mm test height and 133 mm throat depth, weighs about 75 kg, and is supplied with flat and V-groove tables, three indenters and Rockwell C, Rockwell B and HBW 2.5/187.5 test blocks.

  • Modern machine body with a large front-mounted dial gauge; the whole body is powder-coated so the paint shade stays intact and the machine looks new for years
  • Automatic zero-setting readout dial for easy and precise operation
  • Elevating screw precisely guided in a hardened and ground bush, limiting lateral movement to less than 0.05 mm even at full height for long-term accuracy and stability
  • Loading mechanism with a hardened support interface, eliminating any variation in readings caused by table movement or repeated use
  • Perfect vertical movement of the loading plunger ensured by precision bearings
  • Dash-pot controlled load application for a smooth, repeatable test cycle
  • Long machine life with consistent and reliable accuracy
  • Supplied with flat and V-groove testing tables, indenters, certified test blocks, clamping device and machine cover
  • Brinell scales HBW 2.5/187.5 and HBW 2.5/250 with the supplied 2.5 mm ball indenter and Brinell microscope

Operation

How the test runs

  1. Fit the indenter and table for the scale to be tested and select the major load with the load selector.
  2. Raise the specimen against the indenter with the handwheel until the minor load is applied and the dial auto-zeroes.
  3. Apply the major load with the loading lever, wait for the dwell and release the load.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about RASNB

How does Brinell testing work on the RASNB?

The RASNB applies 187.5 or 250 kgf through a 2.5 mm ball indenter to make a Brinell impression. There is no Brinell scale on the dial, so the operator measures the impression diameter with the supplied Brinell microscope and reads the HBW value from the standard tables. The Rockwell scales are read directly on the dial as on the RASN.

Which materials suit the Brinell scales on this machine?

HBW 2.5/187.5 has the same force-to-ball-diameter ratio as the classic HBW 10/3000 steel test, so it gives comparable Brinell numbers on steels and cast irons using a smaller impression. This makes the RASNB useful for grey iron castings, forgings, normalised or annealed steel and thicker non-ferrous sections that are too soft or too coarse-grained for a Rockwell diamond.

What is the difference between the RASNB and the RASN?

Both are dial-reading, hand-operated testers with the same frame, tables and 230 mm test height. The RASN stops at 150 kgf and tests Rockwell scales only. The RASNB adds the 187.5 and 250 kgf loads, a 2.5 mm ball indenter, a Brinell microscope and an HBW 2.5/187.5 test block, and weighs about 5 kg more. Complies additionally with IS 1500 (Part 2) for Brinell.

Which standards does the RASNB comply with?

The Rockwell function is built to IS 1586 (Part 2), ASTM E18 and ISO 6508-2, and the Brinell function to IS 1500 (Part 2). Certified Rockwell C, Rockwell B and HBW 2.5/187.5 test blocks are supplied so that both methods can be verified at installation and checked routinely on the shop floor.

Is there a digital or automatic version of the RASNB?

Yes. The RASN-250-D offers the same Rockwell cum Brinell load range with a digital 0.1 Rockwell readout, USB CSV export and thermal printer; the RSNE-250 adds a motorised load, dwell and unload cycle; and the RSNE-250-T and RASNB-TSFA are the touch-screen versions. All of them still measure the Brinell impression with a microscope.
